The University of Wollongong is recognised by the Department of Education (DE) as a provider of ESL qualifications for primary/secondary trained teachers. DE accreditation will be dependent upon subject choice. In addition to being available in Autumn and Spring session, this specialisation is also available in EDU Intake November via distance mode only.

Structure

The Master of Education (TESOL) requires the successful completion of 72 credit points, including;:
a. core subjects to the value of 18 credit points. EDGZ921 must be completed within the first 36 credit points and EDGT991 be completed towards the end of the degree;
b. 42 credit point of elective subjects selected from the TESOL electives; and
c. 12 credit points of elective subjects selected from the Master of Education Elective Schedule.
Students must not complete more than 24 credit points of 800 level subjects.
Qualified teachers who are seeking formal accreditation as an ESL teacher through the Department of Education should study the following foundation subjects: EDGT917, EDGT930 and EDGT938. EDGT983 is recommended as an elective for those seeking ESL accreditation through the Department of Education.
Applying for credit may impact your eligibility for award with distinction. Please refer to the Coursework Rules, for further information. There may be an alternative pathway available to gain a “with distinction’ award, please contact the specialisation coordinator to discuss.
