Overview

Science is one of humanity’s greatest collective endeavours. Scientific knowledge underpins and advances societies globally via the exploration of knowledge frontiers in an expanding array of disciplines. Scientific and technological advances increase the quality of our lives and guide our care of Earth's complex systems. The scientific community is constantly … For more content click the Read More button below. The Bachelor of Science gives students the opportunity to investigate global issues that affect society and work within interdisciplinary teams to explore creative solutions. In the first year, you will study a range of disciplines to build a solid foundation in scientific knowledge and practice, which aims to help students choose their preferred major from second year. Students can choose from the following majors; Cell and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, and Ecology and Conservation Biology. In addition to these majors, opportunities exist for you to select additional minors to explore other areas of study. A common first year in the Bachelor of Science was introduced in 2021. This will bring all science students together into the same set of subjects in first year allowing you to make connections and be part of a broader scientific community, regardless of the major you eventually choose. This means that independent of which major you choose you will be covering the same key first year subjects. The common first year subjects include global challenges in science, chemistry, biology, and earth and environmental sciences. This allows you the flexibility of choice of your major in the later years of your degree. It provides a broad knowledge base in science and ensures that you have the foundational, pre-requisite subjects to take on any pathway for your second year and beyond.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Science requires successful completion of at least 144 credit points from one of the majors below.
1) 36 credit points of common first year subjects
2) One major from the list below consisting of 108 credit points
3) A maximum of 60 credit points of 100-level subjects
4) Complete a minimum of 24 credit points of 300-level subjects.
Chemistry Rule

Students who have achieved a mark of 65% or more in NSW HSC Chemistry (or equivalent) must select CHEM101 in Autumn and CHEM102 in Spring. All other students must select CHEM104 in Autumn and CHEM105 in Spring.

Students who have completed CHEM104 and CHEM105 and are proceeding to CHEM212 and/or CHEM241 must have obtained marks of at least 65% in both CHEM104 and CHEM105. Additional study material will be provided to bridge the knowledge gap between CHEM104/105 and the 2nd year subjects – completion of this material is recommended, although it is not compulsory. For information about the additional study materials contact the CHEM105 Subject Coordinator.

Mid-year entry in the Bachelor of Science must be in consultation with the Head of Students and due to the sequencing of subjects may take an addition session of study.
Minors

Students are encouraged to consider taking a minor study as part of the BSc program. Inclusion of a minor in support of your major area of study allows you to broaden your view, knowledge and expertise while specialising in areas of interest. Options include, but are not limited to, Earth and Environmental Science, Geoscience, Physical Geography, Archaeology, Biochemistry, Biodiversity, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Geology and Marine Biology.

NOTE: Due to being able to count one subject towards a major and a minor, not all minors are available within all majors.
The Environment major is an exit only major for students who are approved to transfer from the Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours).
