Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Critically analyse the nature of modern legal practice taking into account Australia as a multicultural society, its position in a globalised world and the importance for lawyers of cultural awareness and cultural competence.
2.
Identify and explain the skills required for the modern lawyer given the broad range of contexts in which lawyers are likely to work and changes to practice, including emerging roles and technologies and the impacts of globalisation.
3.
Explain the principles of effective communication, critically analyse the role that communication plays within legal practice and demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly in writing and verbally
4.
Understand the principles of plain language, critically analyse the role that written communication plays within legal practice and demonstrate the ability to write clearly and persuasively.
5.
Apply the principles of legal research and use the tools of legal research to efficiently locate relevant primary and secondary sources.
6.
Apply the principles of good academic practice including the importance of referencing and the details of AGLC4 styles.
