This subject looks at the notion of the state and state power; limitations on state power; the notion of division and separation of powers; mechanisms of accountability and control of government officials, including access to government information, the Ombudsman, merits review tribunals and judicial review.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Critically analyse and evaluate the key principles of administrative law, including accountability, responsible government and the rule of law;
2.
Critically analyse the framework and rationale for merits review in Australia;
3.
Evaluate and communicate procedures for obtaining access to information about government;
4.
Critically analyse the framework for judicial review, including avenues of review limitations, grounds and remedies;
5.
Research, apply and communicate a critical understanding of administrative law to a range of scenarios relating to government actions; and
6.
Critically analyse and evaluate the network of accountability mechanisms in Australia, including but not limited to Ombudsmen, Royal Commissions and Anti-corruption bodies.
