Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Demonstrate the principles underlying and perform basic laboratory skills involved in digestion and electrophoresis of DNA, DNA sequencing, microbial culturing, plasmid transfer, selection of recombinants, and induction/inhibition of gene expression.
2.
Present and discuss current research examples in the areas of gene therapy, gene editing, whole genome sequencing and genome engineering with a focus on the genetic technology and consideration of associated safety and/or ethical concerns.
3.
Demonstrate an understanding of genetic material, the mechanisms of inheritance, genetic variation and genetic regulation in a range of organisms.
4.
Analyse, present and interpret research data generated in the laboratory
5.
Demonstrate effective team-work and successful communication skills
