For those teaching English as a second language, a knowledge of how the English sound system works is essential, not only to help students’ pronunciation but also to improve their listening, reading and writing skills. This subject aims to provide you with a theoretical and practical background in phonology and pronunciation that will enable you to assist learners effectively with their spoken English. The course shows how sounds are produced and represented and gives you an overview of the phonemic and prosodic systems of English. There is a strong focus on working with the learners: on strategies for improving intelligibility both inside and outside the classroom and also on how to make use of online and community resources.
