This subject builds on the skills developed in SOWK238 to further students’ understanding and competence in engaging with clients, conducting multi-dimensional assessments and deploying counselling and case management skills in the context of working with individual clients and families. Students in this subject will participate in simulation laboratory (SIM Lab) practice.  Through both observing social work practitioners and their fellow students, students will participate in real-life case studies and role plays. The SIM Lab practice will equip students with the knowledge and skills required for effective social work practice. Upon completion of this subject, students are expected to have developed adequate engagement, assessment and counselling skills for their second social work placement and have established a foundation for further skill development in their final year studies and for meeting the practice standards of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
