Topics covered in this subject include: basics of data communications and fundamentals of computer networks; layered protocols; error correction techniques; network types and topologies; local area networks; wide area networks; packet switching; internet and transport protocols; and internet applications.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts of data communications and computer networks.

Demonstrate an understanding of the basics of flow control and error correction coding.

Demonstrate an understanding of data communications at each layer of the protocol stack.
4.
Analyse the performance of communication protocols.
5.
Describe the techniques used to implement real computer networks (including addressing, routing and internetworking).
6.
Demonstrate appropriate practical and problem solving skills.
7.
Write reports on exercises undertaken.
