This subject is designed as a capstone experience to develop students understanding of qualitative research methods, techniques and practices useful to research the teaching and learning of English as an additional language (EAL). This subject provides an overview of some common qualitative research methods and their application to a variety of second language learning and teaching contexts. In particular, students will be introduced to lesson study, ethnography, and action research as modes of qualitative research commonly used by practitioners and noted for their usefulness in a range of educational contexts. This subject requires practical and active involvement in the use of qualitative research practices including observing, questioning, conversing, participating, interviewing, data gathering, analysing and interpreting. Direction in the analysis and representation of data is provided to support interpretations and findings. Students will undertake a small-scale qualitative research project, and critically reflect on the value of qualitative research approaches on their development of their teaching practices and teacher identities. Access to an EAL classroom is desirable but not essential; however, access to EAL learners is required. Students may negotiate assignment specifics with the Subject Coordinator or lecturer where indicated. It is recommended that students take this subject after completing at least 24 credit points of study in the MEd programme.
