Handbook

This subject reviews, extends and builds upon the foundational knowledge, practical skills and pedagogical concepts in the arts domains of music and movement (including dance), drama and visual arts that were introduced in EYCA102. The subject will apply content knowledge about music and movement concepts and methods; visual arts methods, techniques, appreciation, principles and elements; and, drama techniques for teachers and children to processes of inquiry-based learning projects and to the design and implementation of holistic, multi-disciplinary curricula. Philosophical, theoretical and practical applications of the arts within early childhood education and care settings will be extended to interrogate the roles, agency and democratic identity of both child and teacher as artist, researcher and teacher. Analysis and reflection about emergent, inquiry-based curriculum exemplars and constructivist theoretical paradigms will extend pedagogical content knowledge and inform practical involvement in music and movement, visual arts and drama experiences in both studio settings and Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings. The exploration of the theory/praxis nexus aims to develop knowledge, confidence practical skills in the arts domain for application for application with children in ECEC settings.
