Subject description

The Renaissance constitutes a crucial period in Europe that saw a re-orientation of the arts and sciences, which in turn deeply influenced the course of world history. LANG335 begins by examining the works of Petrarch and Giotto and stresses the contradictory nature of the Renaissance, concentrating on Italy, France and Spain. Students will study the art, learning and literature of the period (including literary works by Boccaccio, Petrarch, Castiglione, Rabelais, Montaigne, Ronsard, and Cervantes, plus the anonymous 'Lazarillo de Tormes'), in the context of underlying social and political tensions.
