Handbook

This subject will provide students with an introduction and overview of the research regarding autism and neurodivergence. Students will gain an understanding of autism, including the key criteria for diagnosis, common characteristics across the spectrum, relationship to neurodivergence and other conditions, and influence of biological and environmental factors. Students will examine the history autism including different models of disability and will reflect on how these have shaped cultural attitudes, practices and impacted autistic individuals and their families. The diagnostic process and importance of assessment will be examined and the research on evidence-based practice for autistic and neurodivergent individuals will be explored. Finally, this subject will provide students with a foundation of understanding about the need for considering the perspectives and supporting the life-long learning, self-determination and advocacy of autistic individuals and their families by creating inclusive environments and practices.
