Handbook

In this subject, students will be provided with knowledge and options to examine the specific communication and transition needs of autistic or neurodivergent individuals with a range of diagnoses (e.g. intellectual impairment, ADHD, learning difficulties, etc.). Beliefs and factors that inhibit bi-directional communication between neurodivergent individuals and others in different environments will be discussed including personal beliefs which may influence engagement and practice with autistic and neurodivergent individuals. Students will use of formal and informal assessment to identify communication needs of autistic and neurodivergent individuals and to support the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) skills and strategies in different environments. Students will demonstrate knowledge of research inorder to utilize interdisciplinary processes to develop and implement transition plans and programs that support autistic and neurodivergent individuals to successfully undertake horizontal and vertical transitions. Students will examine ableist and traditional models of practice in order to identify recommendations for using a learning-based approach to transform future practice.
