This subject focuses on our current understanding of aspects of microbial pathogens, the immune system, and the ways in which the immune system defends the body against pathogens. The relationship between host and microbe is a delicate balancing act. We will learn about the major groups of microbial pathogens, and important aspects of clinical microbiology, before examining the multiple facets of the immune system in humans. The interactions between pathogens and the immune system will be explored, both in theory and as an integrated part of the practical exercises. We will discuss the impact of infectious disease on the global community, and the importance of harnessing beneficial microbes to enhance global health. We will explore the most recent advances in diagnostics and therapeutics including vaccine development and whole genome sequencing, to understand approaches to controlling infection. As such, this topic addresses issues central to the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Health and Well-being and Reduced Inequalities. We will build on your career-ready skills through exposure to industry relevant concepts, the development of written communication skills and team based laboratory work. You will gain experience in practical skills that explore critical techniques medical research and clinical microbiology.
