Handbook

In this subject, students will examine relevant research, legislation and policies to implement curriculum and create learning plans and programs that support the meaningful inclusion, learning and self-determination of autistic and neurodivergent learners across the lifespan. In this subject, students will be provided with knowledge and options to examine the specific learning needs of autistic or neurodivergent individuals with a range of diagnoses (e.g. intellectual impairment, ADHD, learning difficulties). Students will examine developmental theories of learning and will use this information to assess the learning needs of autistic and neurodivergent individuals in school, postsecondary and employment settings. Students will apply a decision-making data-based framework to create both individual and inclusive learning plans and programs and will incorporate the perspectives of autistic and neurodivergent learners and their families in creating and implementing these programs. Students will reflect on their own practice and will examine the barriers that inhibit the inclusion of autistic and neurodivergent individuals in education and learning programs and communities and will identify the ways they can use interdisciplinary processes to strengthen the self-efficacy of autistic and neurodivergent individuals as active lifelong learners. Finally, students will discuss the ways in facilitating inclusion of neurodivergent individuals has mutual benefit for all involved.
