Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Identify and describe common ore-forming minerals and textures in hand-specimen and using reflected light microscopy techniques;
2.
Define and identify types of metalliferous and industrial deposits in the field and their modes of formation and occurrence;
3.
Relate the link between ore-forming processes and tectonic environments of formation;
4.
Explain and critique the environmental problems related to mining activities;
5.
Analyse, integrate and evaluate geological and geophysical data in terms of resource assessment and exploitation;
6.
Formulate strategies for the exploration of new mineral deposits;
7.
Critically assess the advantages and limitations of the various analytical methods used in mineral exploration.
8.
Identify career options and demonstrate a knowledge of the industries that employ geologists
