Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Able to demonstrate an understanding of the effect of adding a second (binary) and third (ternary) component to iron on the stability, structure and properties of ferrite and austenite.
2.
Able to describe structure/property relationships in Fe-C-X alloys.
3.
Familiar with the concept of hardenability and the way(s)it can be measured,
4.
Familiar with commercial alloy steel designs in such categories as constructional, tool and die, stainless and heat resisting steels.
5.
Familiar with common non-ferrous commercial alloys, their processing, structure, properties and applications.
