This subject consolidates pre-service teachers’ understanding of quality mathematics teaching and learning in secondary schools with a focus on linking theory to reflective practice through the planning, programming, implementing, assessing and evaluation of a program of learning for the associated Professional Experience.

This subject revises and builds on the research-based approaches to effective mathematics teaching in Years 7-10 introduced in the Mathematics Pedagogy 1 and focuses on Stage 6 mathematics courses (Board of Studies NSW) as well as strategies, approaches and resources for teaching them. The role and value of mathematics across the curriculum and the relationships between mathematics, numeracy and literacy are considered. Current issues in mathematics education are addressed such as applications in real life contexts, gender issues, and social and cultural perspectives on mathematics.

Students are encouraged to develop their identities as beginning teachers whose responsibilities extend beyond the classroom to include continuing professional development, interaction with other professionals, students’ families, and the community surrounding the school.
