Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Critically analyse the history of social work practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
2.
Investigate own cultural, racial and family background and identity, and subsequent situatedness to/with privilege, with comparative regard to the lived experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
3.
Develop knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ ways of knowing, being and doing including cultures and cultural values, and the complexity of communities, as well as the contemporary issues and articulate their implications for social work practice;
4.
Evaluate and analyse the role social work can play in the landscape of inequality and social justice regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
5.
Develop knowledge of culturally appropriate processes to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ ways of knowing, being and doing, and demonstrate the application of this knowledge with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
6.
Develop knowledge of culturally responsive practice strategies, skills and tools for working respectfully and meaningfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
