Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:
1.
Critically analyse the ways in which contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples and issues are represented in mainstream Australia and the resulting social impact.
2.
Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experience with attention to geography, history and identity and implications for social work practice.
3.
Critically analyse the impact of social policies and practices on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and examine the role of racism, whiteness and social work in this.
4.
Identify existing principles to guide social work practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and justify their value.
5.
Demonstrate advanced understanding and application of cultural competence and cultural safety in work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
6.
Investigate your own cultural situatedness, your family background and its relations with white privilege and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, being and doing.
