Mining Engineering major for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Mining Engineers apply science, geoscience, engineering and technology to the efficient exploration and extraction of minerals from the earth, turning raw materials into valuable products. Following the first year of core foundation subjects, the course focuses on the design of engineering systems, with an emphasis on mining methods, ventilation, environmental engineering, rock mechanics, ore reserve estimation, computer modelling and simulation, mineral beneficiation and mining economics. The final sessions of the course are professionally orientated with the inclusion of subjects such as mine planning, work health and safety, mine rehabilitation and green mining technology, the environmental sustainability of mining operations and project management. The degree can be combined with majors in Environmental, Civil, Mechanical or Materials Engineering. Double degrees are also available.

Structure

To qualify for award of a major in Mining Engineering in the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), complete 144 credit points and satisfy all course requirements for the major outlined in the structure below.
a) 96 credit points of core and
b) complete one of the thesis options below;


i) CMEA498 Thesis A (12 credit points) or
ii) CMEA499 Thesis B (18 credit points)
CMEA499 must be taken by students enrolled in the Scholars degree and may be taken by high achieving students, with permission of the Academic Program Director.

c) and Elective subjects to bring the total to 144 credit points from Elective A and Elective B list as specified below or any approved minor from the General Schedule of Minors.
Students should consult with the Academic Program Director directly to help in planning out their program of study.
List B electives are common to all majors for the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) and listed here: Elective B list.
The total electives for Years 3 and 4 is 4 electives from List A and 2 electives from List A or B for student completing CMEA498 Thesis A (12 credit points) OR 3 electives from List A and 2 electives from List A or B for student completing CMEA499 Thesis A (18 credit points).
