Course structure

The Graduate Certificate in Public Health requires the successful completion of 24 credit points, including:
a.12 credit points of core subjects; and
b. 12 credit points of prescribed electives from the list below, selected from the Master of Public Health specialistions.
For students completing this degree part-time, it is recommended that you consult with the APD for advice regarding subject selection to meet the requirements of the degree.

Learning outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of the course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:
1.
Identify information that incorporates public health values, behaviours and cultures and consider strategies to improve population health and reduce inequality.
2.
Describe the social basis of public health and the importance of achieving equality and social justice, particularly for First Nations people across the world.
3.
Examine the cultural, economic, environmental and political determinants of poor health and inequality; and explain how an understanding of these contribute to generating solutions to public health challenges.
4.
Demonstrate when and how to apply quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis to generate the best available evidence.
5.
Critically review ways in which transformative skills in leadership, communication, advocacy, financial management and working with communities, policy makers and other agents can be applied to implement and evaluate public health programs.
6.
Discuss the global context of public health and how international agencies, governments, business, universities and communities can work to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
